What Causes Sewer Backups in Southwest Florida?

Tree roots, grease, broken cast iron — the real causes of sewer backups in Lee, Charlotte, and Hendry counties, and how to stop them.

If wastewater is bubbling up out of your floor drain or your tub, you're not dealing with a clogged sink — you have a main sewer line problem. After 17 years of running these calls across Lee, Charlotte, and Hendry counties, here are the six causes we see again and again.

1. Tree root intrusion

Roots find any tiny crack in clay or cast iron and grow toward the moisture inside the pipe. Once inside, they form a net that catches grease, paper, and debris until the line is fully blocked. Hydro jetting clears the roots short-term; spot repair or pipe lining fixes it for good.

2. Grease and food buildup

Kitchen lines are the #1 cause of recurring backups. Grease cools and coats the inside of the pipe; food and soap scum stick to it. Snaking punches a hole — the buildup remains. Hydro jetting actually scours it off the wall.

3. Cast iron corrosion (the Florida classic)

Homes built before 1980 in Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, and old Cape Coral often still have cast iron drains. Florida's water chemistry and humidity eat them from the inside out, leaving rough pipe walls that catch everything. We diagnose with HD camera before quoting a repair.

4. Bellies and offsets

A bellied pipe sags below grade and waste settles in the low spot. An offset is a separated joint. Both cause repeat backups even after cleaning. Camera inspection is the only way to confirm — and it almost always means a spot repair.

5. Flushed wipes and foreign objects

'Flushable' wipes are not flushable. Neither are paper towels, dental floss, or feminine products. They survive the trap and lodge in the main.

6. City sewer or septic backup

Sometimes the problem isn't your line at all — the city main is surcharged or your septic tank is full. We can identify this on the first visit so you don't pay to clean a line that wasn't the problem.

What to do right now

  • Stop using all water in the house immediately
  • Don't flush — it makes the backup worse
  • Move valuables off the floor near the affected drain
